Do I require Management training?Sometimes at the start of a course our tutors are asked this question by a delegate: “I have been a manager for several months/years, everything has gone well and as far as I am concerned there are no particular issues or concerns… so just why have I been asked to attend this particular Spearhead management training course by my line manager?” This situation is more likely to arise when the line manager has not clearly communicated the objectives of attending the training course to their direct report. Without this clear communication some delegates fear a hidden agenda or become overly concerned that their line manager thinks there is something wrong with the way they are managing. Whilst these fears and concerns are understandable, they are rarely true because a course is not just for those who don’t know how to manage or are having difficulties in a particular situation. Of course, our training courses can help an inexperienced or struggling manager develop the skills they need to tackle specific problem areas, but they also provide many other benefits. In particular, they allow managers to review their organisations management processes and benchmark these against best practice. Our open training courses also provide the opportunity to meet managers from different organisations and, of course, pick up new ideas. As such the training can be very beneficial, not only to the manager attending but also to the organisation who “sent” them. Whilst our tutors will explain these benefits to the delegate asking the question “Do I require management training”, the training will be more beneficial if the line manager not only books courses for their direct reports but also spends a little time beforehand discussing why the course is considered appropriate. |
